Books
my 5/5s
lovely war by julie berrya story of two couples trying to find love in the midst of WWI with themes of hope, forgiveness, and steadfast love.
the sweetness at the bottom of the pie by alan bradleythe first book in a fantastic mystery series following flavia de luce, a child prodigy in chemistry and detective work. the series is both comedic and charismatic, and flavia's precociousness is balanced by a believable twelve-year-old psyche.
howl's moving castle by diana wynne jonesfunnier than the movie and just as cozy, with witty, imaginative writing and captivating characters.
the way of kings by brandon sandersonthe stormlight archive series (of which the way of kings is the first book) is actually the only brandon sanderson series i've been able to get into. it has inventive, original worldbuilding (becoming more and more rare in the fantasy genre), an ensemble cast, and compelling, exciting storylines. a masterclass in epic fantasy!
laddie: a true blue story by gene stratton-portera love letter to a childhood spent outdoors. i always describe it as little house on the prarie for adults!
anne of green gables by l.m. montgomerya classic for a reason! it's a character-driven story that's both funny and heartwarming. also avonlea is my dream place to live.
the lord of the rings by j.r.r. tolkeinmost people have seen the movies, but too many people overlook the book. it's the richest story that i've ever read. there's something strangely comforting about the story of a few people in a dying world trying to do the right thing while knowing that failure is the most likely outcome. i couldn't say it any better than c.s. lewis: "here are beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron".
gaudy night by dorothy sayersthe third book in the lord peter wimsey series that features harriet vane (read those other two first!) the mystery isn't exeptionally good, but the characterization and development of harriet and lord peter is some of the best i've seen.
